The crash program to develop an MS was called Operation V, the most successful part of that project was the high mobility unit called Gundam. Made out of superior alloys, and wielding battleship weapons, an army of Gundams would have sent the Zeon packing, unfortunately the Gundam cost too much, and was too difficult to mass produce. After conceding the Lunar Titanium armor, and extra beam weapons what came about was the GM, a cheap easier to produce version of what the Gundam had been intended to be. The RGM-79 was mass produced and despite the many design changes from the Gundam prototype, GMs were still had the benefit of an upgrade after the battle of Odessa, getting infortant combat data from the Gundam's
